Position Summary
Vigilant Cyber Systems, Inc. (VCS) is looking for a College Intern to support the advancement of our SBIR programs. As an intern, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers to design and develop software and systems that make use of AI and machine learning. This role will give you hands-on experience in software engineering while learning how technology can be applied to real-world defense challenges. You’ll contribute to creating tools that are practical, easy to use, and effective in operational settings.
Experience / Degree
Progression towards a related STEM degree.
The ideal candidate will have experience in many but not necessarily all of the following skills:
- Ability to write software or scripts in any or all of the following languages or scripting environments (Java / Scala / Python / Rust / Typescript / Javascript / Bash / Powershell)
- Apply IaC practices to design consistent, reproducible environments for testing and deployment.
- Machine learning basics – familiarity with common ML concepts, workflows, and model development, including training, validation, and evaluation.
- Database experience – knowledge of relational databases (e.g., SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL), schema design, queries, and data integrity.
- Log and metrics platforms – experience with ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) or comparable tools for data ingestion, indexing, and visualization.
- Version control & CI/CD – proficiency with Git workflows (branching, merging, code reviews) and experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- UI/Frontend development – ability to design and implement user interfaces; experience with frameworks such as ScalaFX, JavaFX, React, or similar.
Required
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to obtain a DoD security clearance.
- Ability to work independently and in a small, fast-paced R&D team.
Preferred
- Experience with cluster-based virtualization environments.
- Background in testbed development or systems simulation.
- Familiarity with DoD or critical infrastructure systems.
